Thanks for checking out Affinity Painting’s blog posts. Today I want to share with you how we started and why we started. Unlike other companies where the owner may be the 2nd, third, or fourth generation painter my background was much different. I never expected to own and run a painting company, and it has been one of the best choices I have made.
You see, I was a career law enforcement officer for 16 years and reached the rank of Lieutenant. I worked for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Carrboro Police Department. My goal was to serve my full term, 30 years, and retire and move on to do something else such as a small business. However, those plans all changed on one day and moment in time.
It was early 2015 and we responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex. The situation was ok and the parties involved were arguing over some family matters. We resolved the situation and I went back to get in my patrol car. As I sat down in the driver’s seat sharp pain overcame my lower back as well as sent pain down my right leg. I couldn’t move, the car was small, and I had on 4o pounds of gear. To make a long story short the Fire Department arrived and back-boarded me out of the car, and off to the hospital I went.
After a lot of physical therapy, surgery, and pain the condition did not improve. Continuing in my career did not look promising. In the end I would no longer be able to perform as an officer anymore, and medically retired in November of 2015. The part that was hard to overcome was how something so seemingly minor, like getting into a car, could
The doctor told me he rarely sees people that hurt themselves doing really heavy things. It’s usually something like picking up an item off the ground, using the bathroom, shaving(really?), and other simple tasks. I was surprised by that, and now had to figure out what I was going to do. Although my law enforcement career was over it was really a mixed blessing. Times have become very turbulent for officers, and the increase of violence made me feel better about stepping away from it all. However, I will miss those times of helping others that could not help themselves, and doing good for others even when they didn’t know it.
After retiring I had to have another surgery on my back, and while recovering I began my quest to find something to do. There was no way I could stay home everyday because I would go stir crazy. Affinity Painting was born, and we have not looked back since. My cousin, Zach Brothers, works with me and we learned everything we could about painting. We consumed every bit of information that we could to make the painting business work. Learned paints, application techniques, cabinet refinishing, and blue-print takeoffs. In addition, we developed three painting crews that do the projects while we work on sales, estimates, and the overall customer experience.
A series of life events led me to create Affinity Painting, and I could not be any happier with our achievements. Affinity Painting been named 2017 Best Painting Company by Mebane Readers Choice. We have helped hundreds of home owners and business owners by providing the solutions to the problems they face, and while providing service the way it should be. We look forward to the future, and doing our part in making the world a better place.
These days I keep my back in shape through exercise and diet. I find that the more I move and stay active the better off I am. Of course this is true for anyone. Owning and operating the painting company gives me exactly the motivation and busy work that I need, and I love helping people make informed decisions.
As the saying goes…”If you rest…you rust!”
